The Bible frequently uses clouds to symbolize both the majesty and mystery of God. Throughout Scripture, clouds and thick darkness convey God’s glory and presence (Exodus 19:9; 1 Kings 8:12), judgment and wrath (Joel 2:2; Zephaniah 1:15), mystery and hiddenness (Job 37:21; Psalm 18:11), as well as guidance and protection (Exodus 13:21; Nehemiah 9:19). Even life itself is described as fleeting like a cloud (Psalm 90:10), underscoring human weakness.
Psalm 97:2 holds profound theological meaning for those suffering in Myanmar today within the ongoing Spring Revolutionary War (since February 1, 2021) and the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, 2025. Amid such crises, many cry out for food, shelter, safety, etc. In the midst of lament, believers ask, “Where is God?” He appears hidden, veiled in divine mystery. Yet the verse declares: “Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.”
The Psalmist employs clouds and thick darkness to reflect the divine mystery and hiddenness of God amid suffering—realities deeply felt in Myanmar today. War and disaster have brought lament and a sense of divine silence. Yet Psalm 97:2 offers eschatological hope: God's throne, the seat of His sovereignty, is founded on righteousness and justice. Though His providence may seem inscrutable, God is neither absent nor indifferent. In His perfect time, He will act according to His holy and just character.
For Christians in Myanmar and around the world, Psalm 97:2 is a call to persevere in faith. In the face of suffering, we trust that God, the righteous Judge, sees, remembers, and will act in His appointed time, kairos. This promise empowers believers to endure, resist injustice, and look forward to a future where His justice will prevail.
