(ENGLISH VERSION)
28 March 2026 (Saturday) 14:30 – 18:00
Venue: Divinity School Chapel, Chung Chi College, CUHK
Speaker: Prof. Mark Goodacre
(Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins, Department of Religious Studies, Duke University)
Professor Goodacre, who has been with Duke University since 2005, specializes in the New Testament and Christian Origins. He holds an MA, M.Phil, and DPhil from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the Gospels and the Historical Jesus, and he has authored four major books, including The Case Against Q (2002) and Thomas and the Gospels (2012). In addition, he is widely known for his online resources on New Testament studies and for his podcast, the NT Pod. His expertise has also been featured in TV and radio programs such as The Passion (BBC/HBO, 2008) and Finding Jesus (CNN, 2015-17). In his new book The Fourth Synoptic Gospel (2025), he synthesizes long-neglected evidence with newer perspectives to present a compelling case for John’s familiarity with all three Synoptic Gospels.
Public Lecture│Theme: Was John the Fourth Synoptic Gospel?
Abstract: Since the middle of the twentieth century, the majority view has been that John’s Gospel was independent of the Synoptics. Its author was drawing from a Signs Source or oral traditions. But this view has recently been challenged, and there is now momentum for suggesting that the author did, after all, know the Synoptic Gospels. In these lectures, Mark Goodacre will argue that John is frequently “Synoptic”, and that the Gospel presupposes, builds on, and dramatically transforms Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
14:30 – 15:30│ Lecture 1 How John is Synoptic
15:45 – 16:35│ Lecture 2 John’s Christological Transformation of the Synoptics.
